In the year 2187, Earth’s skies were choked with the remnants of a long-forgotten war—a perpetual twilight of ash and storms. The sun was a myth to most, its warmth lost beneath the smothering clouds. Humanity clung to life in underground cities, powered by dying generators.

Twelve-year-old Eli had only seen the sun in history books. His grandfather spoke of it like a deity—"golden, life-giving, endless"—but Eli had stopped believing in fairy tales. Until he found the solar panel.

It was buried in the ruins of Old Boston, cracked and dusty, but intact. His grandfather’s eyes gleamed. "If we can get it to the surface, just once…"

They smuggled it up through the tunnels, risking the toxic winds. At the peak of the dead world, Eli held the panel to the gray sky—and for one fleeting moment, the clouds thinned. A weak, but undeniable, beam of sunlight struck the panel. A single bulb flickered to life.

For the first time in decades, there was light without a generator.

Word spread. Others scavenged for panels. The last light of humanity, it turned out, had been waiting above them all along.

The End.
