Description

1. Function & Purpose:

The primary job of a rail splice is to connect two separate sections of aluminum mounting rail end-to-end. This is necessary when:

The roof array is longer than the standard length of a single rail (e.g., needing a 40-foot run with 20-foot rails).

For easier transportation (shorter rails are easier to ship and maneuver onto a roof).

To navigate around obstacles by creating custom-length rail segments.

2. Key Characteristics:

Design: It is a male-to-female connector that slides inside the hollow channel of the two rails being joined. This internal design maintains the clean, uninterrupted external profile of the rail system.

Material: Typically made from extruded aluminum (for corrosion resistance and compatibility with the rails) or sometimes from stainless steel for maximum strength.

Fastening: It is secured using the existing rail bolts (the same ones used to attach L-feet and panel clamps). The bolts are tightened into pre-tapped threads on the splice itself, which pulls the two rail sections together tightly.

3. How It Works:

The splice is inserted into the end of the first rail section.

The end of the second rail section is slid onto the exposed part of the splice.

The installer aligns the two rails perfectly straight.

Bolts are inserted through the rail's channel and tightened into the threaded holes on the splice, clamping both rail sections securely onto the splice.

Structural Integrity: A properly installed splice creates a connection that is as strong as, or even stronger than, a continuous piece of rail, maintaining the system's ability to handle wind uplift and snow loads.

Compatibility: Splices are typically designed to be brand- and profile-specific. A splice from one manufacturer (e.g., IronRidge) may not fit correctly with the rail from another (e.g., Unirac).
